In fact, inscriptions in and around the garden emphasize its distinct and obscure qualities. This dissertation explains that when compared to other private Italian Renaissance gardens of the sixteenth century, the Sacro Bosco is an anomaly that intentionally ignores the rules and traditions typically followed in the creation of pleasure gardens.
